The Alexander Technique is a form of mind/body re-education. It teaches maximally efficient body movement which, in every day activities, results in much less effort and strain. The resultant movement is comparable to the graceful ease of animals … always light, always free, even after sustaining trauma or injury. This dynamic "primary control" in the way they move, helps animals maintain balance against gravity. Human beings have this same control, but may have lost touch with it due to stress, injury or trauma. The Alexander teacher provides hands-on guidance which takes students through basic movements, and develops in them an ability to choose more coordinated responses.
The fundamental improvements that occur with the Alexander Technique can have positive effects on a wide range of behaviors and skills. Using the body in the way it was designed to function can produce effects, such as ease of movement, better posture, reduction or elimination of chronic pain, improved respiratory function, and reduction or elimination of psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is also used by musicians, artists, and athletes to enhance their performing abilities.
